Personally my great grandmother, and grandmother was pushed out of her house on the waterfront by penns landing. She bought her house in the early 1920’s, and was pushed out in the 1950’s. When she bought the house the neighborhood was filled with different ethnic groups. My grandmother explains that she lived in that house for a long time, and it just started to change after a while. Her mother was one of the last people of the original neighborhood, and when it was too much money for her to pay, the neighborhood was beginning to be rebuilt. Now when I revisit penn's landing I can’t help but think my great grandmother. From hearing that story from my grandmother, and comparing it to now the ways of property taxes and gentrification are the same. It starts to happen little by little, and after a while the neighborhood starts to look new. My great grandmother always told my mother to save money, “because the ones who spend excessively won't be ready when something suddenly comes up.”
With a rise in property tax, and a movement to clean up philadelphia neighborhoods gentrification has started to uprise. In certain areas of temple, gentrification has changed the scenery vastly. “As Temple nears its 130th year as a resident of this North Philadelphia neighborhood, it continues to receive notable criticism from the community concerning the gentrification of the surrounding area.” Temple has been responsible for new houses in the north philly area for a while. James Hilty a former professor from temple says “Many people think of gentrification as removing black families and replacing them with white, middle class families, in which old homes are removed and the old texture of a neighborhood is lost.” He then goes on to describe what happened “What happened, of course, was that the bulldozers came in and started knocking down old row houses and buildings,” Just from reading these quotes and the rest of the article, you could tell the residents of temples area weren’t pleased at all. They felt as if the area the called home was being taken from them. Temple isn't the only part of the city that is being bought, and renovated. However its one of the biggest renovations thats has taken place in philadelphia the past 100 years.
